How to play low shots into the wind?
As we head into the colder months, one of the noticeable changes here at Murray Downs is the strong, cold southerly winds start to move in. On this I thought I would help teach you how to play low shots into the wind.
When playing a shot into the wind the key is to play low controlled shots with a minimal amount of spin on the ball. The more spin imparted on the ball the more the chance the ball will balloon up into the sky and lose distance and direction.
Reducing the spin on shots comes from reducing the angle the club hits the ball and also making a smooth and slow tempo.
The swing fundamentals we also need to concentrate on are the following:
1. The set up changes a little from you standard set up. In picture opposite right you will notice that Luke has moved his ball position back two positions in his stance, his club shaft is angled more towards the target and his weight in on his front foot.
2. The swing itself is abbreviated not quite full, just around shoulder height.
3. On the down swing we are trying to make sure get our chest level with the ball at impact. Take a divot but only a very shallow divot. See Picture Opposite Right. (Need to ensure a full release, you will notice Luke’s arms are fully extended after impact).
4. The follow through is equally abbreviated as with the back swing. See Picture Left.
Points to remember are to always take at least one club more and swing slowly. Try to make sure the grip of the club leads the club head through impact.
Take small shallow divots. Deep divots make the shot go out of control.
