Murray Downs Club News - Quarterly Issue 3 - 2009.

sevens-golf-cupAt the start of the year we introduced a new 9 hole competition called Sevens golf.  This event was so popular we have chosen to run two seasons this year with the first season starting September 28th.

The format is a 9 Holes stableford competition with teams of 7 competing against each other throughout a season and then at the end of the season the winner is decided by an elimination finals series.

This event is open to all golfers regardless if you have a handicap or not. After the first round you are allocated your own individual sevens handicap.

For those interested parties please contact the Pro Shop so we can organise for you to be placed in a team.

Held on the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd of August, this years event was our largest field yet with 184 players participating. Mick Kiley and Graham Sheldrick took out Saturday honors with 9 up while Ross Hastings and Brian Hinton were successful on Sunday with 7 up. The overall Murray Downs Masters winners were Jason Korb and Travis McCarthy scoring an admiral 17 up for the 2 days. This event has grown from small beginnings, to today where it has grown to be as popular as our Golden Putter event in June.

club-fittingA Tip From the Pro - Club Fitting

Murray Downs Club News - Quarterly Issue 3 - 2009.

We would never ever dream of spending our hard earned on clothing that didn’t fit, so why would you consider spending possibly in excess of $1000 on equipment that is not tailored to your needs and requirements.

Even though you may play of a high handicap, it does not mean that you should not be using equipment that is made especially for you. Whether it is a full set, a half set or even a specialty wedge.

The Lie angle of your club is one of the most important facets of any player’s equipment. If you are using irons that do not have the correct lie angle you have already hit your shot off line. An incorrectly fitted iron even by 2 degrees will send a correctly struck shot offline by up to 6 metres let alone a poorly struck shot.

The effects of an incorrect fitted club shaft length is not only on the quality of our shots but also on our technique. The effect a golf clubs shaft length has on golfer’s posture at address influences our technique dramatically. If the club shaft is too short, the player will stoop to get down to the ball or will make mid swing compensations to adjust for the incorrect length.

The same problems will be reversed if the club is too long. The player will possibly stand to upright and will again compensate mid swing for these faults in club length. The most important factor in fitting a golfer to correct club length is getting a length that creates the most consistent strike.

Having a set of club’s that are not correctly fitted can create a tremendous amount of technique problems. So the next time you are getting down on yourself about the way you are making contact with the ball,
just remember it might not be you but actually your equipment.

Remember “Make your equipment work for you and not you for your equipment”
